Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. Lima was founded on January 18, 1535, as La Ciudad de los Reyes, or "The City of Kings." It became the most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru and, after the Peruvian War of Independence, was made the capital of the Republic of Peru. There are still vestiges of the apogee of colonial Lima like numerous churches that are jewels of the Latin American architecture. Lima is an intriguing and exotic mix of races, cultures, traditions and styles, with a world-class culinary platform. It has been deemed a cultural patrimony amongst cities by UNESCO and there is much to offer: museums, pre-Inca pyramids, and picturesque neighborhoods drenched in history.
